The Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad is a premier short line, with track from Chicago, Illinois east to South Bend, Indiana – and south to Kingsbury, Indiana. We serve all types of business – large and small, with a concentration in steel, roofing materials, and coal. The Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad provides superior service to our customers through a combination of both scheduled and on-demand service. Cars ordinarily move directly from the customer facility to interchange and vice versa without the need for movement through a classification yard. Our round-the-clock train dispatchers maintain close communication with all trains, customers, and connecting railroads to ensure your cars arrive on time.
Our customer service center employs knowledgeable and courteous employees anxious to serve customer needs. All freight trains are manned by highly-trained personnel, qualified to operate over several railroads in the Chicago terminal as well as the South Shore. The South Shore owns ten 2000 horsepower GP38-2 locomotives and our railroad car fleet exceeds 400 cars. The fleet is composed of gondolas, covered coil steel cars, and flat cars to serve on-line customers. Our equipment shops, for both locomotives and cars, are located in Michigan City, Indiana and perform a wide range of general maintenance and repair as needed. The Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad’s main lines are well-maintained and equipped with an automatic block signal system. Track segments with the heaviest traffic density are laid with 115-Lb. continuous-weld rail. The entire mainline track structure meets or exceeds Federal Railroad Administration Class 4 standards, permitting freight trains to travel at speeds up to 50 miles per hour.
